In "The Black Balloon," 16-year-old Thomas navigates the challenges of adolescence while adjusting to a new life in a small New South Wales town. With his father away in the army and his mother expecting another child, Thomas feels the pressure of family dynamics, especially regarding his older brother Charlie, who is autistic. As Thomas develops a crush on Jackie from his swim class, he grapples with Charlie's unpredictable behavior that complicates their interactions.
