Overview

Sarah Maldoror, a filmmaker and griot with a theatrical background, shines a light on the often-overlooked African decolonization struggles amidst the Vietnam War. Her short film, Monangambée, poignantly depicts the brutal torture inflicted by the Portuguese military on an Angolan resistance supporter. After completing the editing, Maldoror connected with the Art Ensemble of Chicago during a concert in Paris, persuading them to contribute a soundtrack pro bono as a testament to African-American solidarity. Filmed in Algiers, Monangambée explores the harrowing realities of torture and the deep chasm of understanding between the colonized and their oppressors, drawing inspiration from Luandino Vieira's novel.
