Overview

In 1596 Venice, Bassanio desperately seeks financial help from his wealthy friend Antonio to pursue the beautiful heiress Portia. However, Antonio's assets are tied up in overseas ventures, leaving them in a bind. To secure the funds needed for his courtship, they approach Shylock, a Jewish moneylender known for his strict terms. As tensions rise between Shylock and Antonio, their agreement sets the stage for a dramatic exploration of friendship, love, and the complexities of justice in a divided society.
