Vera Vexley, who edits the puzzle section of the Metropolitan Ledger and works as a part-time consulting detective for the local sheriff’s office, has been invited to spend the holidays with the affluent Sterlings, friends of her family. However, the festive season takes a dark turn when a murder occurs on Christmas morning, revealing that the Sterlings are harboring numerous secrets.
