Overview

In 1838, beautiful governess Elisabeth enters into a secret arrangement to bear a child for a wealthy English landowner, who agrees to settle her father's debts. After giving birth, she relinquishes the child as promised. Seven years later, Elisabeth becomes the governess for a young girl on a secluded Sussex estate, only to discover that her employer, Charles Godwin, is the same landowner.
