Moresby Hall, perched above the Cumbrian fells, has housed numerous noble families since the 12th century, making it the oldest residence in Copeland borough and a Grade I listed structure. The name "Moresby" likely traces back to an early settler, possibly named Morisceby, Mawriceby, or Moricebi, around 1150. The Moresby family gained infamy in medieval times, expanding their estates through conquest and strategic marriages. Christopher de Moresby, one of the family's notable figures, fought valiantly at Agincourt and received accolades from King Henry. Four generations later, Anne, Christopher's great-granddaughter, became the sole heiress and married Sir Francis Weston, who was executed alongside Queen Anne Boleyn. Eventually, Anne sold Moresby Hall to William Fletcher, a prosperous merchant from Cockermouth, and the Fletcher family maintained ownership for 250 years.
