Smilodon was a formidable Ice Age feline, comparable in size to today's tiger, boasting impressive fangs that reached nearly 18 centimeters in length. However, it was merely the most recent and largest of the great sabertooths; the trend of elongated canines had been established for millions of years by the time Smilodon roamed the earth. Interestingly, those enormous teeth might be making a resurgence in the future.
