Episode Overview

Nick Rowan, a London policeman, and his newly qualified doctor wife, Kate, relocate to the picturesque village of Aidensfield in the North Yorkshire Moors, where Nick takes on the role of the local constable. As they adjust to their new life, Nick's section sergeant, Sgt. Blaketon, brings him to confront the village troublemaker, Claude Greengrass, insisting that Nick press charges for livestock worrying after Greengrass’s dog, Alfred, killed a budgie. Despite Greengrass's admission and offer of compensation, Blaketon is adamant about the charges. When the case reaches court, it collapses due to the lack of classification of a budgie as livestock. Simultaneously, a local woman, Georgina Fraser, reports a prowler at her home, leading to an incident that draws Nick to the Aidensfield Arms pub to investigate further.
