An unsettling incident at the Royal Edward Hotel during Assistant Chief Constable Alison Vosper's farewell party puts Grace and Branson in a tough spot as they are required to scrutinize all hotel guests, including prominent members of the East Sussex police force. Grace feels an unsettling familiarity with the situation—he suspects that the Brighton Prowler, a menacing figure from his history, might be back or perhaps this is a mere imitation.
