Andrew Ackerman believes that Mary’s guest appearance on The David Susskind Show will attract more attention and funding for the psychiatric ward at Fernwood Receiving. During her time at the ward, Mary encounters Wanda Rittenhouse, who expresses gratitude for making "BDs" more accepted. When discussing her feelings with Dr. Williams, Mary mentions she’d prefer to be a plant over a person, but he reassures her of her inner strength.
