Mildred beams with pride over Veda's success as a singer, but her joy is dampened by her daughter's refusal to answer her calls or letters. Spending time with Monty Beragon leads her to buy his family mansion, and they decide to marry. Mildred is overjoyed when Monty arranges for Veda to perform at their wedding reception. However, Veda’s newfound fame has only heightened her arrogance, resulting in numerous offers for endorsements and performances in New York. Meanwhile, Mildred faces a significant setback as her Laguna Beach restaurant begins to falter, forcing her to tighten her personal budget. She realizes Wally Burgan and Ida are eager to take her place. Despite her sacrifices for Veda, her ex-husband Bert suggests that Veda should pitch in more. Mildred's world shatters when she unexpectedly returns home.
