Virginia City faces a wave of crime led by Sam Bryant and his crew. Tensions rise when one of his associates, Farmer Perkins, murders a shopkeeper. During the trial, the victim's wife hesitates to take the stand due to fear. With Perkins sentenced to death, Bryant kidnaps Ben, demanding his release in exchange for Perkins.
